OTH East Bavarian Technical University

The Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg (OTH Regensburg) is a university of applied sciences in the Free State of Bavaria with a long tradition. OTH Regensburg was founded in 1971, although its predecessor institutions can be traced back to the beginning of the 19th century. It has an extensive academic portfolio in the disciplines of engineering and economics, computer science and mathematics, social and health sciences, architecture and design.

In Eastern Bavaria, the OTH Regensburg plays an outstanding role in scientifically based practical training, applied research and academic continuing education. The university secures the next generation of scientists for the region and beyond. It is an indispensable partner in research and technology transfer.

Thanks to its size and its attractiveness to applicants, OTH Regensburg can offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The high number of interdisciplinary study programmes and the variety of subject-specific and personality-building content are special features here. For some topics in teaching and research, OTH Regensburg has a unique selling point in Eastern Bavaria and in some cases far beyond.

OTH Regensburg has achieved great success in recent years.

  • Today, we have twice as many students as ten years ago, while at the same time offering the highest quality of studies - as evidenced by numerous top positions in the CHE ranking.
  • Our study programmes cover the entire spectrum of subjects from architecture, design, engineering, economics, social work and health.
  • In applied research and transfer, we work closely with innovative companies and provide impulses for the further development of the region.
  • We are internationally networked, with around 200 active partnerships with universities all over the world.
  • The infrastructure of the university is continuously being expanded and modernised.

Local environment

Regensburg is a city in eastern Bavaria, at the confluence of the Danube, Naab and Regen rivers. It is capital of the Upper Palatinate subregion of the state in the south of Germany. With more than 150,000 inhabitants, Regensburg is the fourth-largest city in the State of Bavaria after Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg. From its foundation as an imperial Roman river fort, the city has been the political, economic and cultural center of the surrounding region. Later, under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire, it housed the Perpetual Diet of Regensburg.

The medieval centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2014, Regensburg was among the top sights and travel attractions in Germany.

It is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Regensburg, has three universities and is one of the three regional centres in Bavaria.

Economically, Regensburg is strongly characterised by manufacturing (automotive, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, microelectronics). Unemployment is below the Bavarian state average (January 2018: 2.7%; state average in November 2017: 2.9%). With 760 socially insured employees per 1000 inhabitants, Regensburg has a high job density.
