ESG Impact Framework for Sustainable Innovation
As sustainability and responsible innovation are central to European policy and economic development, higher education institutions and their ecosystems are increasingly expected to integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into their core activities. Within this context, the ARTEMIS alliance developed a structured approach to embedding ESG across knowledge and technology transfer. Our deliverable D5.1 (ESG Impact Framework for Sustainable Innovation) introduces a comprehensive ESG framework designed to assess, guide, and scale startup activities within ARTEMIS. It combines training, evaluation, and stakeholder engagement to ensure that entrepreneurial initiatives align with key European priorities such as the Green Deal and sustainable growth strategies.
This ESG Impact Framework is built on a multi-criteria evaluation model that integrates both qualitative and quantitative indicators, extending beyond traditional ESG dimensions to include innovation potential, business model resilience etc. Its components include the development of an ESG evaluation tool, an ESG-related data-collection questionnaire, a micro-credential course for educators, and the integration of ESG criteria into startup incubation and funding processes. By linking ESG assessment with training and access to impact investors, our ESG Impact Framework creates a coherent system that supports the development of ESG-native startups. It also enables benchmarking and transparency across partner institutions. This deliverable establishes the foundation for a long-term transformation in how innovation ecosystems operate, ensuring that ARTEMIS not only fosters startup success but also contributes to inclusive, sustainable, and socially responsible regional development.
