ARTEMIS strengthens its digital platform vision through shared lessons and best practices from European University Alliances in Málaga.

Representatives of Ovidius University of Constanța, Oana Roxana Radu and Alexandru Bobe, took part in the DiPYUA Satellite Workshop – “Digital Platforms of Young University Alliances: Challenges & Best Practices”, hosted by Universidad de Málaga and organized by UNINOVIS – Data for L.I.F.E.. The event brought together members of emerging European University Alliances to explore how digital platforms can effectively support collaboration, governance, and long-term development.

Over two intensive days, the workshop offered both strategic insights and practical perspectives, highly relevant for the ongoing development of ARTEMIS European University Alliance.

Learning from experience (Day 1)
The first day focused on lessons shared by first- and second-generation alliances. A key takeaway was clear: digital platforms are not simply technical tools, but the operational backbone of an alliance—where governance, identity, trust, interoperability, and sustainability converge.

Among the most relevant insights:

  • Adoption is primarily a human and organizational process, not just a technical one
  • Federated approaches tend to build more trust than fully centralized systems
  • Identity and access management must be integrated from the beginning
  • Sustainability needs to be designed into the platform from the outset

From concepts to practice (Day 2)
The second day shifted towards real-life implementations and use cases. Participants explored how platforms such as those developed by Outfox or aUPaEU foster active communities through features like user profiles, notifications, search functionalities, and user-generated content.

Discussions highlighted that successful platforms:

  • Remain flexible and adaptable to evolving needs
  • Enable innovation not only technologically, but also organizationally and culturally
  • Rely on inclusive, co-creation processes to ensure legitimacy and adoption

A central idea emerged throughout the sessions: digital platforms succeed when they empower people, not when they attempt to control processes.

Implications for ARTEMIS
For ARTEMIS, this experience reinforced the importance of building a people-centered, federated digital ecosystem, aligned with both European values and the real needs of alliance members. Rather than replicating existing solutions, the focus is on understanding key principles and learning from the challenges already encountered by other alliances.

Participation in the Málaga workshop marks another step in ARTEMIS’ ongoing journey toward designing a sustainable, inclusive, and effective digital infrastructure to support its long-term vision.
